Development of a steam turbine generating unit with a capacity of up to 5 MW for a low-power nuclear power plant for the Arctic regions

The Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation until 2035, aimed at sustainable regional development and strengthening national security, emphasizes the strategic importance of Arctic energy projects, including small modular nuclear power plants (SMNPPs). SMNPPs are the most attractive energy alternatives in terms of reliability, independence from fuel components, and environmental impact.
Two northernmost nuclear power plants in the world operate in this region: Bilibino and Kola NPPs. By 2030, it is planned to commission 2,091 MW of installed capacity in the Russian part of the Arctic, including 600 MW provided by nuclear power plants.
Within this project, layout solutions for a steam turbine installation (STU) with a capacity of up to 5 MW were presented, designed for operation in areas with seismic activity up to 8 points and a maximum temperature range from minus 65°C to plus 45°C.
