On November 1, Maksim Zagornov, Business Ambassador of Business Russia to the UAE, President of Distributed Power Generation Association, took part in the official reception held by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in the Russian Federation. The event was timed to the upcoming COP28 International Climate Summit, one of the key 2023 events of the UAE dedicated to combating climate change.
The Reception of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in the Russian Federation was attended by leading Russian companies in the field of green energy, energy-efficient technologies and sustainable development. Representatives of government authorities, sectoral and foreign organizations, and scientific communities were guests of the event.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the UAE to the Russian Federation Mohammad Ahmad Al-Jaber made a welcoming speech to the audience. He noted that COP28 is of particular importance for the Emirates and called for combining efforts in accelerating the energy transition and combating climate change.
"COP28 will summarize the results of the program announced at COP21 in Paris. Our goal is to turn promises into real actions aimed at combating climate change and prevent the global temperature from rising by over 1.5 degrees on the planet. Together with Russia and the whole world, we can change the world for the better. COP28 is the key point. Let's act together," stated the UAE Ambassador to Russia Mohammad Ahmad Al-Jaber.
Ruslan Edelgeriev, Counsellor to the President of the Russian Federation, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Climate Issues, also delivered a welcoming speech. He noted that the climate agenda is an important topic for Russia.
"The proof of this is the new Climate Doctrine, according to which Russia aims to achieve carbon neutrality no later than 2060. It means that in less than 40 years, industrial greenhouse gas emissions in our country should stop. However, a long-term solution of the problem is possible only with the participation of all the states. Russia is ready to take part in developing collective actions," Ruslan Edelgeriev said.
Maita Ahmed Al Saleh, economic and trade affairs specialist at the UAE Embassy in Russia, presented the COP28 International Climate Summit and spoke about the key points of the upcoming global event.
The COP28 International Summit will be held from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City Dubai. The event is expected to bring together over 70,000 industry experts, 140 heads of State, high-ranking government leaders and 5,000 journalists.
The goal of the COP28 is to accelerate the energy transition and combat climate change. The business program of the 15-day summit will be divided into thematic blocks. The following key poits are in the COP28 special attention zone:
- accelerating a fair, orderly and equitable energy transition;
- addressing climate finance issues;
- switching the focus to people's lives and nature;
- full inclusiveness.
For the first time at the COP28, the whole day of the summit will be devoted to wellness, and a ministerial meeting on climate health will also be held. A separate pavilion will be built at the summit for representatives of indigenous people, who make up 5% of the world's population.
As Maita Ahmed Al Saleh noted, holding COP28 in the UAE is quite predictable. Since its establishment in 1971, the Emirates has supported the global climate agenda. The Arab Emirates, being in the center of climate impacts and undergoing a serious energy transition, has been facing the climate change problem to overcome for a long time already.
Moreover, the UAE is the first country in the Middle East to ratify the Paris Agreement, to commit to reducing emissions across the economy, as well as to declare the Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative having proved its serious intentions in combating climate change.
