In 2016 the International Award «Distributed power generation – great achievements» was marked by a «move» to the capital of Russia. For the first time in the four-year history of the project the presentation of the main award of the competition — statuettes «Golden Lightning» — took place in Moscow: representatives of finalists from different regions of Russia and countries of the near abroad came to the capital. The solemn ceremony was attended by First Deputy Chairman of the Energy Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Sergey Yesyakov and President of the Distributed Power Generation Association, energy ombudsman of the Chelyabinsk region Maksim Zagornov.

In 2016, 52 projects from Russia, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, the Republic of Belarus, Germany were announced for the Prize. The geography of Russian participants covered almost all regions of the country — from Khanty-Mansiysk and the Altai Territory to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar. The award was presented in four categories: «The best project in the field of distributed power generation up to 5 MW», «The best in the field of distributed power generation from 5 MW», «The best project in the field of alternative energy» and «Innovative development in the energy sector».
